FDA Delays Decision on ‘Morning After’ Pill
Aug. 26, 2005 - The FDA has put off deciding whether to allow over-the-counter sales of the Plan B “morning after” pill.
The problem isn’t safety, says FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford, DVM, PhD. The agency is convinced the emergency contraceptive is safe for all women.
The problem, Crawford says, is that the FDA isn’t convinced that women under the age of 17 can understand the product’s instructions for use. That’s why last year it rejected the full over-the-counter status requested by manufacturer Barr Pharmaceuticals.
I also just read about the head of the FDA’s dept of like “women’s health” resigning because they said this was all a big pile of stinking abortion politics.
Kind of makes me sick. I don’t really have much else to add on the matter, except that THIS IS NOT ABORTION! IT IS CONTRACEPTION!
Which I suppose is also against the über-religious right.
BBC NEWS | Americas | UN finds global inequality rising
A UN report has found that the world is more unequal today than it was 10 years ago, despite considerable economic growth in many regions.
Sad to think that with all the progress this world is making, it still doesn’t manage to quite include everyone. Or a lot of times to even TRY to include everyone. It sometimes makes me sick how much “policy” is geared only towards self-interest. I’m not educated enough in the theories behind political policymaking, but I know at least on the gut level it seems wrong to me to only worry about our nation’s best interest. For example, when we talk about helping out poor under-developed poor nations, it’s not really because we feel bad, it’s because we don’t want them to turn into “festering bastions of terrorism”.

MaxiFrame 1.0.1 - MacUpdate
MaxiFrame is a new category of QuickTime playback utility that introduces SFD, a technology that gives users new options for multi-monitor Fullscreen Mode and custom playback of QuickTime media. With SFD, Fullscreen mode can use all monitors as if they were one entity; any selected monitor in a multiple monitor configuration; or a user-selected custom rectangle available in the current monitor-visible space.
Neat functionality… but I’ll stick with VLC for my video playback for now… since it’s free (though I may try this out if the demo isn’t too limiting)
CradleVue laptop mount for cars restores family bliss
”Honey, we need to get a portable DVD player for the kids to watch on road trips.”
“Oh, c’mon, we can just use the laptop. It has a DVD player in it already.”
“What, you want them to hold it on their laps? In the back of the minivan?”
“So, I’ll rig something up to strap it between the seats.”
“Yeah, right. With duct tape again?”
“Sure. What’s wrong with that?”
“After what happened last time? It’s ridicu — hey, wait.”
“What?”
“Look, on Engadget. It’s the CradleVue — a laptop harness that safely and securely straps any laptop between the two front seats, in a perfect viewing position for kids in the back. And it’s just $24.99.”
“So?”
“So, let’s get one!”
“Fine — but I still think duct tape would do the job.”
Haha, this site is great…
US finally mandates tech recycling plan - Engadget - www.engadget.com
Bout time…
then again, as a commenter “Louie” remarks:

Yeah! So let’s spend our taxes recycling all of our “ancient” electronics instead of donating them to schools and charities who could actually use them.
FuzzMeasure allows you to see and understand the acoustic properties of audio equipment and listening spaces. By accurately measuring the frequency response of a room or electrical component, FuzzMeasure reveals resonant frequencies, muddy bass, tinny treble and other elusive, qualitative sonic properties. FuzzMeasure allows you to easily compare multiple responses side-by-side, which enables you to make incremental tweaks (moving furniture in a room, for example) and immediately see the difference.
FuzzMeasure’s design makes a highly complex tool very easy to use. Whether you use FuzzMeasure as a hobbyist, or you work in the acoustics or audio field, you will appreciate the work that went into making it easier to get your work done. Download a copy and try it out for yourself!
FuzzMeasure 1.3 - MacUpdate
Perhaps this will then allow you to create customized EQ presets that bring out the best in a particular set of speakers/headphones etc… ?
Neat! (expensive though… $125)
Neat looking piece of software. Here is the “abstract” or whatever….
Jaikoz is an audio tagger for ID3 and MP3. It has many advanced automation features, making it quick and easy to correct the meta-data in your audio tags. It works especially well with large music collections. It uses a spreadsheet view to allow you to edit information more quickly than other applications, and provides many autoformatting tasks that do most of the work for you. For example, it compares your MP3s to each other to help correct missing information or spelling mistakes.
See the project page: freshmeat.net: Project details for Jaikoz
