Google plans to hire programmers to improve OpenOffice.org, a demonstration of its affinity for open source initiatives and one the company believes also shows sound practical sense.
Quite interesting move on google’s part. Their strategy has always intrigued me, the sort of research “freeforall” sounds like so much fun. There was a great “Charlie Rose”:http://www.charlierose.com/ where he interviewed one of the high-ups and talked about their strategy of engineering emphasis.
Anyways, this is especially interesting given the recent discourse regarding Microsoft and Google competition. After all, this is pretty much a direct move to give open source a leg up on MS Word, no? I haven’t read the article yet, but I assume it goes into more detail regarding the reasons behind Google’s decision.
