Children who are smacked are more likely than those who are not to become aggressive and anxious, no matter what the cultural norm, a study says.

The Japanese Avant-Prog

I found some tracks on alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.avant-garde that caught my attention, especially after talking with my piano teacher today about the evolution of Jazz and cross-culture/genre music. The songs were labeled as “Avant-Jazzcore”, a genre I had never heard of before, so I googled it. Here’s a great page exploring the underground genre-crossing music scene in the land of the rising sun… (The songs I saw were from a 2002 Painkiller live recording in Nagoya. Japan?)
The Japanese Avant-Prog

The modern underground music scene in Japan is arguably the most interesting and diverse on the planet. Though Japanese pop has generally been an exercise in Western idolatry, the musicians in the underground tend to favor their art above all other concerns. Ironically, the diversity and seemingly endless collection of strange music coming from this scene is contrary to its spirit: that of community and collaboration. Even between various genres, say punk and progressive, underground musicians have been known to stray.

As I just lengthily explained, I have very little love for corporate hierarchies and all the folklore that goes with it. Ironically, the ostensibly “free” world of major Open-Source development never fails to irk me in the exact same way…

A quite entertaining post about corporate B.S., opensource software, and more — written by the man who brought you SpamKarma (a neat Wordpress Plugin that prevents blog spam, that I’ve luckily so far not had to install yet…)

NOT the guy who made Kubrick as he so humbly pointed out :)

Kubrick being the default Wordpress (the blog system I am using (I’m using a different theme called “China Red” (No this is not related to my taking Chinese (but it’s a cool coincidence)))) theme.

Aaaand, I just finished upgrading my Wordpress setup to 1.5.2, the latest version! Went without a hitch!

Awesome.

Used to see tons of these at my old workplace, and did a little research on my own, quickly realizing that it was infact illegal to send these so-called “junk faxes”. I started to collect the ones that came to the many office fax machines, but never ended up doing anything with them…
