A Yuletide Apocalypse

I was reading this editorial over at Metal Crypt, basically musings about the future of Power Metal as a genre, and was deeply saddened by the ubiquity of blatantly homophobic and at times misogynistic language… Completely unnecessary, though I fear endemic to the scene of this often testosterone-infused genre. (Often, but not always.) And testosterone doesn’t have to equal homophobia. Welcome to the 21st century. I really should have known from the start, after all the article is titled “Power Metal…. Metal For The Sissies?”, which the author actually goes on to question, but only in the sense that not ALL power metal is for sissies (but some is… blah blah).
The passage basically speaks for itself:

Power Metal doesn’t have to suck. It’s just that most bands go out of their way in order to make sure that they do. I still haven’t figured out why. I simply seem to be blaming homosexuality for this, but that really isn’t a good enough reason. After all, Rob Halford is a cock-gobbler and his musical talents are about as good as they get. In any case, this tangent type of power metal that I speak of is generally termed as ‘crunchy power metal’ or ‘ballsy power metal’ or ‘dark power metal’.

And it’s a pity because the site, even the article, has the potential to be a really informational resource for those of the ignorant masses in search of the Light of Heavy Metal. Really, their write-up of the various Metal Genres is great. Alas I find it difficult not to write them off, though I must remind myself that this is only one author of many who contribute to the site. Though the culture of the site clearly allows for the expression of such blatant bigotry…
