News Briefs/Links

Here are some interesting links/news-bits I noticed while checking the recent (month’s) headlines from the NYT and the Washington Post…

Oh, and I will eventually be upgrading to WordPress 2 (2.1), but I think I’ll probably do a reformat and reinstall OSX Tiger and Ubuntu linux (dual-boot!!!) first. Right now my 60 gig internal harddrive has a 20 gig OSX partition, two useless 900 meg partitions that are mac formatted but just sit around useless on my desktop (originally was going to be mapped as my /home directory under linux, or even osx… or something) and then a 10 or so gig Ext2 (linux) partition that has been lost into the abyss of partition-land and some random remaining unformatted free space (that disk utility won’t let me format… ugh… not willing to pay for expensive dynamic repartitioning software, and my conscience has been acting up again so no pirating!).

AAAND… this blog managed to eat up almost ALL of my monthly bandwidth during January (this site is amazingly hosted for free at www.buildtolearn.net the best free web host, NO ADS no BULLSHIT! you just have to participate in the community-forums!) So since time doesn’t allow me to participate sufficiently in the forums to earn a bandwidth upgrade, I need to start looking for a paid webhost! I’ve searched in the past but I always end up completely overwhelmed by the myriad options… but i’d love any suggestions…!

Anyways, onto the links…

p.s. still slightly unsure about using this textpad markup… worried about switching away from it and losing all my old links… but will stick with it for now out of convenience… shouldn’t make any difference to you anyways!!

Study of Newspaper Fonts Released

Ascender Corporation announced the release of a study on the typefaces that appear on the front pages of America’s top daily newspapers. This is the first study of its kind and it identified the most popular typefaces, sources, and the pervasive use of custom fonts.

Elk Grove Village, IL - November 9, 2004 - Ascender Corporation, specialists in multilingual and custom font development, today announced the release of a study on the use of typefaces on the front pages of America’s top daily newspapers. Newspapers use a mix of text and display typefaces in a wide variety of styles to communicate the news and to give each newspaper a unique look and personality. While there are more than 50,000 fonts available in the market today for designers to choose from, the study found that newspapers use a much smaller group to grace their front pages.
