Medications do not necessarily normalize cognition in ADHD patients.

OBJECTIVE: Although ADHD medications are effective for the behavioral components of the disorder, little information exists concerning their effects on cognition, especially in community samples.

RESULTS: Significant differences were detected between normals and untreated ADHD patients. Treated patients performed better than untreated patients but remained significantly impaired compared to normal subjects.

CONCLUSION: Even with optimal treatment, based on parents’ and teachers’ opinions, subtle and not-so-subtle neurocognitive impairments persisted in the ADHD patients. Some ADHD patients may require additional educational assistance, even in the face of successful medication treatment.

But cosmetic neurology, as some call it, has risks. Ritalin, Adderall and other ADHD drugs can cause headaches, insomnia and loss of appetite. Provigil can make users nervous or anxious and bring on headaches, while beta blockers can cause drowsiness, fatigue and wheezing.

Martha J. Farah, a bioethicist who teaches undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania, said she was beginning to detect resentment toward students who used the drugs from classmates who did not. She has wondered whether improving productivity through artificial means also might undermine the value of hard work.

Belatedly: Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka, RIP (drummer of Decapitated)

Drummer Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka of the Polish extreme metal band DECAPITATED passed away in a Russian hospital from injuries sustained in a recent road collision. He was 23 years old.

This is such a tragedy for the metal community. I just found out today, as I was abroad in Mongolia since August. It’s completely surreal reading the progressing news reports, first an accident… then surgery but recovering, then DEAD?! I don’t even know what to say. My heart is with the families, and of course COVAN who should know the entire world of metalheads are pulling for his recovery. I’m wearing my Decapitated shirt in the honor of these incredible men and musicians. I sent a few dollars to the fund as well, hopefully it’ll make this whole ordeal a little easier for everyone involved.

Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka – our brother and dearest friend succumbed to head injuries sustained after a bad van accident while on tour in Russia. He was 23.

One of the youngest and most promising drummers in the genre, together with Decapitated he has consistently released albums both crushing and invigorating in their musicianship. Extremely talented – he has been involved in other side projects: Dies Irae, Panzer X.

He will be missed and can not be replaced. The metal scene will be much sorrier with his passing…

Oklahoma senator James Inhofe is Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee–he just published a booklet called “Hot and Cold Media Spin Cycle: A Challenge To Journalists Who Cover Global Warming.” It’s in color and substantiated with lots of pretty charts and graphics and quotes from real, live scientists! Almost as good a read as State of Fear!

Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection Commits Suicide

Swedish sources have confirmed to BW&BK that Jon Nödtveidt, frontman for Swedish metal pioneers DISSECTION, has committed suicide.

More details are expected in the coming hours. Stay tuned for updates as further information surfaces.

In late May, Nödtveidt announced in the band’s final interview that “With Reinkaos (their latest album) we have reached the ending chapter. Dissection’s work is done and this is our legacy.”

Shit.

Psychiatric Drug Use by Children Reviewed By The FDA:

“There is no question we need to do long-term clinicaltrials with kids and psychiatric drugs.” He said the companies, the FDA, and the NIMH should pool their money and establish those trials.
