When scientists perceive injustice in their workplace, particularly regarding how rewards are distributed, they are more likely to compromise their integrity, the researchers found.
What’s more, the correlation is stronger for scientists whose “scientific identity is vulnerable,” Mr. De Vries said. Younger researchers and women in male-dominated fields were more likely to respond to perceived injustices by cutting corners.

From the Health Care for Massachusetts Campaign:
This campaign is a citizen-led initiative to ensure that every Massachusetts resident has access to affordable, comprehensive and equitably financed coverage for medically necessary health and mental health care services. The proposed Health Care Constitutional Amendment requires the Commonwealth to enact laws to accomplish this goal.
Some people have asked “Do we need the Health Care Constitutional Amendment now that we have a health reform bill?”
The answer is: “Yes, Now More Than Ever!”
We need the Health Care Constitutional Amendment now more than ever to make sure the promise of these current health reforms are fulfilled and that we have the tools to finish the job if we need them to ensure that comprehensive coverage for everyone is affordable and sustainable over time.
History tells us that legislation by itself is not enough. The employer mandate in the 1988 Universal Health Care Law was repealed before it was ever implemented. History also tells us that even a ballot initiative for a law may not be enough. The people enacted the Clean Elections Law only to be stalled and eventually repealed by the Legislature. The only major, progressive reform that has been fully implemented - education reform - has a constitutional anchor backed up by the Supreme Judicial Court.
The Health Care Amendment creates that constitutional anchor for affordable, comprehensive, equitable coverage. It will make sure that the promise of today’s reform is fulfilled and that if additional reform is needed tomorrow, we’ll have the political and legal tools we need to get the job done.
Sincerely,
Barbara Roop, PhD, JD :: Campaign Co-Chair

Yay
They’re just really great people fighting for a good cause… I worked there for the past few summers and it is just a terrific place!
I just want to take a moment to recognize both the great work that my friend Haseeb has been doing, but also his uncanny ability to design an amazingly sexy website that is just so cool you have to see it with your own eyes (go! Right now! http://www.rememberafghanistan.org)
Also, I encourage everyone in the greater Middlebury region to attend the symposium of the same name which will begin this coming week and will cover various aspects of the Afghan situation.

Wired News:
To international observers, The Pirate Bay’s defiant immunity from copyright lawyers is somewhat baffling. But in Sweden, the site is more than just an electronic speak-easy: It’s the flagship of a national file-sharing movement that’s generating an intense national debate, and has even spawned a pro-piracy political party making a credible bid for seats in the Swedish parliament.
Open Letter
“I am writing you with much concern after having read of your hearing to decide whether the alternative theory of Intelligent Design should be taught along with the theory of Evolution. I think we can all agree that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints so they can choose for themselves the theory that makes the most sense to them. I am concerned, however, that students will only hear one theory of Intelligent Design.
Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.”

FDA Delays Decision on ‘Morning After’ Pill
Aug. 26, 2005 - The FDA has put off deciding whether to allow over-the-counter sales of the Plan B “morning after” pill.
The problem isn’t safety, says FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford, DVM, PhD. The agency is convinced the emergency contraceptive is safe for all women.
The problem, Crawford says, is that the FDA isn’t convinced that women under the age of 17 can understand the product’s instructions for use. That’s why last year it rejected the full over-the-counter status requested by manufacturer Barr Pharmaceuticals.
I also just read about the head of the FDA’s dept of like “women’s health” resigning because they said this was all a big pile of stinking abortion politics.
Kind of makes me sick. I don’t really have much else to add on the matter, except that THIS IS NOT ABORTION! IT IS CONTRACEPTION!
Which I suppose is also against the über-religious right.
BBC NEWS | Americas | UN finds global inequality rising
A UN report has found that the world is more unequal today than it was 10 years ago, despite considerable economic growth in many regions.
Sad to think that with all the progress this world is making, it still doesn’t manage to quite include everyone. Or a lot of times to even TRY to include everyone. It sometimes makes me sick how much “policy” is geared only towards self-interest. I’m not educated enough in the theories behind political policymaking, but I know at least on the gut level it seems wrong to me to only worry about our nation’s best interest. For example, when we talk about helping out poor under-developed poor nations, it’s not really because we feel bad, it’s because we don’t want them to turn into “festering bastions of terrorism”.
Found this slide from a presentation by the U.S. Comptroller General, “21st Century Challenges: Reexamining the Base of the Federal Government” (April 2005).
Shows what they believe to be the probable outcome of our current fiscal policies (”unsustainable”):
