Problem Type: Plugin not shown
Description:
Not sure exactly what’s going on here… but when I try to view a “formatted document” from ProQuest in Firefox, it shows a page with two frames. A small frame at the top with a header, and a blank white frame below, which seems to be linked directly to a pdf or something (since I can’t even right click on it). The page views fine in IE, and I can open PDF’s in Firefox w/out incident (except for in this case). Now it says in the status bar “The document has been closed by Acrobat - press the Refresh button to reload”. Also, I installed the “pdf download” plugin that intercepts pdf’s before they are handled by the adobe viewer (hoping this might somehow solve my problem) and the plugin doesn’t even intercept the pdf.

Synergy Advance is still in the early stages of its roll out so it does not yet feature all the features of Synergy (although it does feature some things that Synergy does not and never will have because of its architecture). By the time the roll out is complete Synergy Advance will do everything that Synergy can do and much more (see the road map).
[From Synergy Advance]
and yet it hasn’t been updated since MARCH 2007?! (And that was a beta!!!!)
and yet Synergy “Classic” is constantly updated…
3.5a (27 November 2007)
Rewrite in Objective-C 2.0.
This release is the first Leopard-only release of Synergy; for users of older versions of Mac OS X the 3.2 series is still available for download here.
[From Synergy: history]
It’s updated every few weeks, and was completely rewritten… for Leopard only!? How is this a “successor” app?
I guess they say that Synergy Advance is a “preview”, and maybe that’s why it doesn’t have the urgency of keeping the ‘mature’ Synergy Classic polished and running… but I was hoping to be getting in on a cutting-edge product that would grow over time, yet it has remained pretty stagnant since I bought my license months ago…
Note: I’m pretty sure some of the steps below are either redundant, or at least unnecessary (such as moving to the desktop, but I kept that since it helps keep things organized). So do comment on improvements to the process. This is just what I’ve been using.
SUMMARY/ALTERNATE PROCESS:
Just select the songs you want to move in the finder, and double click (or drag into iTunes). They’ll be copied, but not “re-added” as they once were (in previous versions).

And I did it all by myself! I figured out a super clever way to get it to work… (haha)
[Picture went Bye-bye…]
So yeah, basically, I downloaded Q (Qemu packaged for mac osx) which at first, didn’t work on its own (you can actually download reactos from within Q, but it always froze upon completion.)

WOW! There is tons of free guitar software out there… Even a handful of apps that can open GuitarPro files (prolly do a better job than the POS mac version of guitarpro). (These are either osx apps, LINUX apps that can run on OSX, or Web/Java apps). [All are usable at least under OSX, though at levels of functionality that I can’t yet say]

**TabView:”TabView makes it possible to view and print PowerTab tablatures. PowerTab is a well-known and widely adopted tablature editor for Windows systems. You can easily find thousands of song transcriptions in this format on the net. (OSX App)”
**DGuitar Pro: Views, Prints and Plays Guitar Pro (*.GP4,*.GP3,GTP) files!!
**TuxGuitar: A multitrack guitar tablature editor and player written in Java-SWT, Opens GP3,GP4 and GP5 files! Works!! And made “Images” by Cacaphony sound awesome, since it changed a few of the instruments from the GP4 file… (Electronic drums! haha!) And is much smoother working than the official GP for Mac (< a href="http://apoc.buildtolearn.net/wordpress/2006/08/07/guitar-pro-5-for-mac/">blech). Yay!

Tablature is a Java program that lets you author guitar and bass tablatures graphically, playback the songs and publish them into the Web !” (Works, but is awkward and not so useful…)
KGuitar: Untested guitar tab editor for KDE (might work in X11, but don’t have the time to test right now). Can open GP4 files!
Well, I’m very proud of myself… after having downloaded the source code for gdbm (needed to build the Rhyming Dictionary, @freshmeat), I received an error during installation:
/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 -o bin -g bin gdbm.h \
/usr/local/include/gdbm.h
install: bin: Invalid argument
make: *** [install] Error 67
So a quick look inside the makefile and some fiddling around later, I got everything working! All you have to do is change the BINOWN and BINGRP values from bin to the following:
# File ownership and group
BINOWN = root
BINGRP = wheel
Works like a charm!
Yayyyy!
Now time to install the rest of the dictionary…
Alright, problem number 2 came when doing “make install” for the rhyming dictionary itself:
install –mode=755 rhyme /usr/local/bin
install: illegal option — -
Is this just the result of Rhyme not using autoconf? Anyways, I went into the makefile and edited the lines under “install: all” from install –mode=755 rhyme $(BINPATH) to install -m 755 rhyme $(BINPATH)
Worked again! I’m on a rollll!
Skype’s U.S. overture - Print Version - International Herald Tribune:
Skype, the Internet telephone company, has said it will allow consumers in the United States and Canada to make free phone calls, a promotional move that is a new blow to conventional voice calling services.
The offer, announced Monday, extends through the end of the year. It covers calls to traditional land-line phones or cellphones within the United States and Canada from computers or a new category of Internet-connected phones running Skype software.
I knew about this before, but this is as good a time as any to blog it!

iTunes database issues
at
The Apple Blog
I love iTunes, and I love that it provides me with convenient access to all my music. But I’m beginning to get frustrated with some of the interesting DB issues present in the way iTunes was developed.
A great summary of a few of iTunes’ more annoying quirks…
